Organic Summer Choices for Millennials
It does not come as much of a surprise that the Millennials are one of the most eco-conscious generations the world has yet to see. Our age demographic is the most willing to spend more on both locally produced goods and those that are ethically produced. We are also most likely to prefer buying organic produce at the grocery store (Abacus Data Millennial Survey, November 2011). This should hold true for our wine buying habit, so I went in search of locally produced organic wines.
Surprisingly, here in Ontario there are few wineries producing organic wine. When I asked a winemaker friend of mine why this was, he explained that it is not always about what the winery is doing (they would love to make more organic wines) but that it has to do with what your neighbour is doing. Primarily it is difficult for most wineries to avoid cross contamination. Additionally, the vines here in Ontario are like animals at the zoo, if you set them free in the wild they would never be able to find their own food. Then there is also the cost associated with going organic, the resulting yield is naturally lower, resulting in less final product per the amount of vines used.
Organic wine making takes lots of time, effort and a tremendous amount of skill, and fortunate for Millennials there are a few VQA wineries catering to our wishes. These include Southbrook and Frogpondfarm, as well as there are organic offerings from Malavoire, Tawse and Le Clos Jordanne to name a few.
They are the first wine estate in Canada to earn both organic and biodynamic certification for its vineyard and winery. Southbrook offers a few different lines of organic wines through both the LCBO and by visiting the winery itself. I quite enjoy their Connect series, which happens to be their most affordable line as well.

Certified Organic ($14.95)
This lovely off-dry and fruity white is another great summer time sipper. It has a nice acidity that balances with the peach, cantaloupe and slight honey flavours. The little bit of sweetness makes it a great pairing for spice Asian dishes.
2008 Triomphe Cabernet Franc VQA
Certified Organic & Biodynamic ($21.95)
I’ve got a soft spot for Cab-Franc’s and this is a great example of what Niagara can do with them. This extra-dry, ruby coloured red gives great notes of red cherries and raspberries that move into a good amount of spice. There are hints of tobacco in the medium long finish.
